The retractable lifeline cable (Self-retracting lanyard) is known as SRL an extremely important device for workers working at height and entry into confined spaces, where fall protection and mobility are required. The SRL Lifeline System can save a worker's life, but it can also be dangerous if not used properly. Here are some helpful tips.

SAFE USE OF THE SRL

  • The SRL must be used as part of a complete fall arrest system.
  • You should always be trained on the proper use of the SRL before using it.
  • It is designed for a person weighing less than 310 pounds. Always consult the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Always verify that the SRL is designed for your weight.
  • Only one person at a time can use the same SRL.
  • Blocking speed can be affected when working in restricted spaces such as shallow roofs or quicksand.
  • Avoid creating a pendulum situation, where you could swing and fall to the ground, or impact other objects.
  • Other precautions may be required when working in hazardous environments (heat, extreme cold, sharp edges, corrosive chemicals, explosive or toxic gases).
  • When using fall protection equipment, a rescue plan should always be established.

INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

  • Inspect all components regularly.
  • Check for loose screws, and damaged or bent parts.
  • Observe the device for signs of corrosion, cuts, or burns.
  • Check that the hooks or carabiners are not damaged.
  • Each time you use the device, firmly pull the snap-lock hook to verify that it locks.
  • Periodically clean the case with water and mild detergent.
  • Clean the lifeline with mild detergent and water and allow it to air dry. Do not dry it with heat. The SRL may malfunction if it has excessive dirt or a build-up of contaminants.
  • Do not disassemble the SRL or apply lubricant to any of its parts. Always take it to an authorized service centre for proper maintenance.
  • Store the SRL in a cool, dry, clean place out of direct sunlight. Thoroughly inspect the SRL after it has been stored for an extended period. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and storing the device.
  • If a worker falls, the SRL must be taken out of service immediately. If a drop indicator was installed, return it to the manufacturer.
